Suspect captured after shooting at man outside DeLand bar during dispute over $5 drink, police say

Calvin Roosevelt Gilbert, 55, fled in a van, police say

DeLAND, Fla. – DeLand officers and Volusia County deputies spent the weekend searching for a suspect in a shooting early Saturday that took place outside the same bar where a man was shot and killed earlier this month, according to the police department.

Calvin Roosevelt Gilbert, 55, is accused of shooting at another man outside McCabe’s Bar along North Amelia Avenue during a dispute over a drink, the DeLand Police Department said in a news release.

In an update Sunday, DeLand police said that Gilbert — who had been at large — was taken into custody and booked in the Volusia County Branch Jail to face charges of attempted first-degree murder and using a firearm under the influence of alcohol.

A judge ruled Monday that Gilbert should remain in jail without bond.

No further updates are expected this weekend. We will host a media briefing on Tuesday at the DeLand Police headquarters.

Gilbert had never met the victim before that night, police said.

After buying the victim a $5 drink, Gilbert allegedly confronted him outside of the bar early Saturday and demanded a reimbursement, what the release states led to an argument which resulted in Gilbert drawing a handgun and shooting at the victim from about 3 feet away.

The victim ducked out of the way and was not struck by the bullet, the release states, adding the bullet wound up hitting an exterior cooler and penetrating the wall of the building, which was still occupied at the time.

Officers and deputies responded around 2:05 a.m., locating a single 9mm shell casing and observing physical damage to the scene consistent with a shooting, according to the release. Gilbert had run away before entering the van and leaving the scene northbound on North Amelia Avenue, police said.

The victim and bar staff helped identify Gilbert with a photo lineup, the release states.

It was at McCabe’s bar where on May 3, 24-year-old Avantae Williams was accused of fatally shooting 32-year-old Keshod Harris.

News 6 reporter Jarell Baker interviewed Courtney Rickman, a bartender at McCabe’s who was shot in both hands during the incident and told us she was trying to break up a fight when it happened.

“It was the most terrifying thing I’ve ever been through. It happened so fast that I didn’t really have time to get scared when it happened, but, it keeps coming back. It replays in your mind over and over,” Rickman said.

The most recent shooting also comes days after a Central Florida fast-food employee shot and killed a customer during a dispute over a wrong order, according to authorities.
