DELAND, Fla. – The DeLand Police Department on Tuesday held a news conference after the arrest of a 55-year-old man accused of shooting at another man outside a bar over a drink.
Police said Calvin Roosevelt Gilbert was arrested on Sunday in the shooting outside McCabe’s Bar along North Amelia Avenue.
According to the department, Gilbert bought the victim a $5 drink and then demanded a reimbursement, which led to an argument and the shooting.
“Whatever their dispute was over this $5 drink, it’s just ridiculous to think that it ended up in a person nearly losing their life,” police said.
Police said victim and Gilbert had been drinking inside the bar and got into an argument around closing time.
The man was able to duck out of the way and avoid the bullet, which hit a cooler and struck the wall of the building, police said.
Gilbert then ran away after the shooting, police said. Police on Tuesday said during a news conference that the department is reviewing McCabe’s liquor license and that the bar has been served a violation of lease notice.

“The owners of the bar, they have a lease, an agreement, with the management of McCabe’s Bar. And I’m being told they’re in violation of some of these parts of the lease. And the ownership is going to demand that the hours of operation change,” police said during the news conference.
The department will also beef up illegal patrols around the area now.
“We have ongoing patrols, we have a special enforcement team that’s been out since the homicide that’s been working extra details in evenings along with the Volusia Sheriff’s Office,” police said.
He was later arrested and was being held without bond on charges of attempted first-degree murder and using a firearm under the influence of alcohol.
The shooting happened weeks after a former high school football star was arrested in a fatal shooting at the same bar.
Avantae Williams, 24, was arrested in the fatal shooting of 32-year-old Keshod Harris.
