– A legendary guitar once owned by Kurt Cobain has become the centerpiece of a new exhibition at London’s Royal College of Music, according to CBS news.

The rare Martin D-18E electro-acoustic guitar stands as the last instrument the Nirvana frontman played before his death. Cobain used it during the band’s MTV Unplugged performance in 1993, just months before his tragic death at age 27.

The guitar, which fetched $6.1 million at auction, making it the most expensive guitar ever sold, represents a significant piece of rock history.

Cobain purchased the instrument second-hand from a Los Angeles shop. Only 302 of these guitars were ever manufactured.

Visitors can view this piece of music history at the Royal College of Music’s latest exhibition.
