MARION COUNTY, Fla. – A license plate check ended with a lengthy chase last week in Marion County, according to the sheriff’s office.
In a release, deputies said the incident happened on June 6, which is when a deputy conducted a license plate check on a green car after pulling into a Circle K parking lot.
However, the check revealed the that car’s owner — identified as Jerry Gibson, 43 — had a suspended driver’s license, deputies added.
As a result, the patrolling deputy tried to pull Gibson over, but Gibson instead fled, eventually stopping near Northeast 142nd Place and Northeast 117th Court to take off on foot, investigators announced.
Afterward, more deputies were called to help, and Gibson was soon spotted hiding on a rooftop, the release shows.
“Deputies issued commands, but Gibson ignored them and ran across the roof before jumping down and continuing to flee through nearby yards,” the release reads.
Despite repeated commands to stop, Gibson kept running, though a K-9 unit was ultimately able to catch Gibson, deputies explained.
But Gibson began striking the dog, prompting a deputy to Taser him before taking him into custody, investigators said. The K-9 was revealed to be just fine and was given treats for the capture.
Now, Gibson faces charges of resisting arrest, striking a law enforcement animal, failure to register a motor vehicle, and driving with a suspended license. He is held on bond of $9,000.
“Actions have consequences, and trying to outrun the law will only make things worse,” the release concludes.
The sheriff’s office also released footage of the chase, which can be watched at the top of this story.
