NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. – Two people golfing in New Smyrna Beach were indirectly struck by lightning on Friday, according to the city.

Emergency crews responded around 12:18 p.m. to the Venetian Bay golf course, the city of New Smyrna Beach said in a statement.

New Smyrna Beach Fire Department personnel evaluated the golfers, neither of whom required transport to the hospital, the statement reads.

This serves as an important reminder of, “When thunder roars, go indoors.” If you can hear thunder, you’re close enough to be struck by lightning, even if the sky looks clear. Don’t wait for rain. Seek shelter in a fully enclosed building or a hard-topped vehicle immediately.

The news came minutes after it was confirmed a 29-year-old man was struck by lightning elsewhere in New Smyrna Beach during a bout of bad weather. That man was hospitalized in critical condition, according to Volusia County Beach Safety Director Tammy Malphurs.

Storms moved over New Smyrna Beach after popping up around noon Friday in Central Florida, prompting weather warnings in the area.
