SOUTH DAYTONA, Fla. – South Daytona police say they’ve identified a person of interest after a battered 70-year-old woman was hospitalized for treatment of critical injuries on Friday, according to a news release.

Officers responded that morning to the Red Carpet Inn along South Ridgewood Avenue, where a 911 caller reported his fiancé had “walked into the room and collapsed in a pool of blood,” the release states.

Investigators determined a battery had occurred, police said, adding that the woman was taken to Halifax Health Medical Center in critical condition. No further details about the scene or the woman had been shared at the time of this report.

The Volusia County Crime Scene Unit and personnel with the local state attorney’s office responded to help South Daytona police investigate the incident, according to the release. A person of interest was identified and there was no danger to the public at the time of this writing, police said.
