Train overturns in Ocala, spilling cargo all over the ground

Incident happened behind the Cypresside Townhouses

OCALA, Fla. – A train derailed near a townhouse complex on Friday morning, causing its cargo to spill out onto the ground, according to Ocala Fire Rescue.

In a release, fire officials said they received a report about the derailment around 11:16 a.m. behind the Cypresside Townhouses at 2223 SE 14th Ave.

Upon arrival, fire crews discovered that a Florida Northern freight train, made up of two engines and eight cars, had derailed, fire officials added.

“Three of the eight cars were lying on their sides, with their cargo — rocks — scattered across the ground," the release reads.

However, there were no reported injuries, nor was any hazardous material spilled from the train, the release continues.

No additional information has been provided about the derailment, including the cause of the incident.
