KISSIMMEE, Fla. – The official tourism marketing corporation in Kissimmee is actively working to attract visitors from Canada to the many attractions of Central Florida, amid concerns over international tariffs and border tensions.
Behind the scenes of the bustling theme parks are local workers like Caleb Johnson, a bus driver for the past seven years who helps tourists navigate the area.
“Tourism is very important, it’s what pays my bills,” Johnson said, expressing his worry over potential declines in Canadian visitors.
Disney employee Ken Smith echoed this concern, emphasizing the significance of tourism for livelihoods throughout the region.
Experience Kissimmee highlights that tourism benefits the entire community and reportedly saves each household $4,400 annually in taxes.

DT Minich is the CEO and President of Experience Kissimmee. He was recently appointed to the Visit Florida board of directors.
He also just recently returned from a promotional trip to Toronto, Canada’s top international market for Kissimmee’s tourism.
When asked if people in Toronto know what Kissimmee is? Minich remarked, “They do now”.
Minich acknowledged current challenges, noting, “There is some resistance right now to travel to the U.S. among Canadians,” due to tariffs and political rhetoric. However, he reassured that the region remains “Canadian friendly” and eager to welcome visitors.
Despite geopolitical tensions, Minich reported that visitor numbers are up so far, but cautioned that the true test will come this fall when northern temperatures drop.
Johnson added, “I want Canadians and everyone of every nation to feel comfortable, to feel safe coming here, especially if they are spending their dollars.”
The message from Kissimmee’s tourism leaders is clear: they value their Canadian visitors and hope to maintain strong ties despite the current challenges, recognizing the critical role tourism plays in supporting the local economy.
