‘Another scumbag fraud artist:’ North Carolina man scams Volusia County woman out of $30K, sheriff says

Cory Ray Woodall, 56, faces charges of organized scheme to defraud, grand theft

VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. – A 56-year-old North Carolina man faces charges after being accused of scamming a Volusia County woman out of $30,000, according to Sheriff Mike Chitwood.

According to a social media post by the sheriff, a 70-year-old Volusia County woman sent $60,000, including $30,000 in cash after responding to an email about a wounded military dog.

Investigators said that Cory Ray Woodall of Oxford, North Carolina, convinced the woman that she was helping a retired Army general get back to the U.S.

Woodall then is accused of using they money to purchase car, a mower and a trailer.

“Not only did we catch another scumbag fraud artist, we brought him back here to face the woman he took for $30,000,” the social media post stated. A video attached to the post shows the woman and Sheriff Chitwood confronting the man who is inside of a vehicle.

“How many other people did you spend their money?” the woman asks Woodall.

Officials did not state what happened to the remaining $30,000, but at one point in the video, Chitwood asks where the Bitcoin was transferred to.

“To others involved in this scam, we’re coming after you next,” the post concluded.

An arrest report for Woodall was not available as of this writing, but we will update the story as more details are releases.

Woodall was taken to the Volusia County jail where he faces charges of organized scheme to defraud and grand theft.
