Gun found on Marion County elementary school bus; 9-year-old taken into custody

Bus was en-route to College Park Elementary School

OCALA, Fla. – Police officers in Ocala took a student into custody after a gun was found on a bus to a Marion County elementary school.

Police say they were called to a school bus in the area of SW 14th Street and SW 27th Avenue, north of SW College Road on Monday morning. Police say a 9-year-old on the bus had a gun.

“The juvenile was safely detained after initially resisting officers. A loaded .38 caliber revolver was recovered from the floor near the juvenile’s seat. No injuries were reported, and all other students on the bus were unharmed,” the police said.

The department learned the fourth-grade student took a loaded .38 caliber revolver from a relative’s secured bedroom. Police said the child admitted to taking the gun on Sunday, bringing it onto the bus hidden in his clothing and showing it to other students.

The bus was on its way to College Park Elementary School.

“The student did not threaten anyone with the weapon; however, other students saw it and reported it to the bus driver, who immediately alerted authorities,” the district said in a statement.

The district said the child faces “serious discipline and legal consequences.”

The boy faces the following charges:

  • Possession of a Firearm on School Property
  • Possession of a Firearm by a Minor
  • Carrying a Concealed Firearm
  • Armed Burglary
  • Grand Theft of a Firearm
  • Disruption of a School Function
  • Resisting Arrest Without Violence

No other information was released.
