FLAGLER BEACH, Fla. – Flagler Beach is considering new restrictions on where people can fish along the beach. The city says the current mix of fishermen, swimmers, and surfers creates safety concerns.
But local fishing groups are pushing back against the proposed ordinance.
“Most anglers want to be on the beach early, catch their fish, go home. They don’t want to deal with the swimmers,” said Mike Vickers Jr., president of the Flagler County Sport Fishing Club.

Local anglers have already started a petition opposing the proposed surf fishing ordinance. The ordinance would ban fishing in certain beach areas.
Many fishermen prefer time restrictions or clearer guidance instead of a full ban.
“Not an all-out ban! Let’s put some common sense in it,” Vickers said.
Vickers explained that the beach is not just for sport or tournaments — many anglers run businesses there.
“During tournaments the anglers could be there until about 2 o’clock in the afternoon which would then intermingle with the swimmers and that’s the reason we’re looking to get some guidance,” he said.
The ordinance would not ban fishing everywhere on the beach but would create restricted zones. Where those zones will be is still undecided and will be debated by the city commission.
According to the proposed ordinance, anyone who breaks the rules would receive a citation.
“It’s just a level of being considerate and friendly,” beachgoer Marissa said.
Some local families who visit the beach understand the desire for safety but want a compromise.
“Not fishing on top of someone’s family, but they definitely should be able to fish the beach,” resident Rhett said.
The proposed swim safe zones will be presented to the city commission later this month.
