SEMINOLE COUNTY, Fla. – Seminole County on Wednesday opened sandbag locations “out of an abundance of caution” as Central Florida braces for more flooding rains this week.
The sandbag sites will be open at the following locations:
- Old Geneva Volunteer Fire Station, 215 2nd St. in Geneva (bring your own shovels)
- Merrill Park, 985 Merrill Park Drive in Altamonte Springs from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Central Florida has experienced days of tropical downpours and we are still in a pattern of unsettled weather, thanks to a lingering front and a very moist atmosphere.
Here are the rainfall totals for Seminole County from Sunday through Tuesday:
Heavy rainfall on Monday caused the Little Wekiva River near Altamonte Springs to rise. The river crested at 28.6 feet, just above the minor flood stage of 28.5 feet. The river quickly receded after cresting to minor flood stage.
Scattered afternoon showers and thunderstorms are likely through Thursday, with rain chances around 60-80% before tapering off slightly through Friday.
The biggest concern continues to be locally heavy rainfall, especially in areas that have already seen several days of downpours. Some neighborhoods could pick up 1-2 inches of additional rain in a short time, which may lead to minor flooding.
A Marginal Risk (Level 1/5) for excessive rainfall remains in place.
