VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. – A man was arrested after a shooting broke out at a DeLand homeless camp late last month, according to the Volusia Sheriff’s Office.
In an arrest affidavit, deputies said they responded to 2621 N. Woodland Blvd. on the morning of Aug. 27 after receiving a call about the shooting.

“Prior to arrival, Volusia Communications advised a male had shot at a male and female,” the affidavit reads. “It was also advised one male had a machine gun, and the other had a handgun.”
Upon arrival, deputies said they learned that there were three suspects in total who had left the homeless camp and entered a nearby residence.
One of these suspects — Juan Olascoaga, 31 — was discovered close by, though he “spontaneously uttered he called 911″ and admitted to being the man who fired the gun, deputies added.
“Juan advised he was the only person at the residence, and the other Hispanic males had left the scene,” the affidavit continues.
Afterward, investigators said they contacted the two victims, who claimed that the three men had approached their homeless camp: one of whom was driving a bulldozer, and the other two equipped with firearms.
According to the victims, the three men were at the scene to destroy the homeless camp, though a heated argument broke out between Olascoaga and one of the other men, the affidavit states.
At some point, a suspect pointed a gun at one of the victims, and Olascoaga reportedly fired multiple rounds from his rifle into the ground, investigators wrote.
Detectives said they searched the nearby building, finding only a rifle on a bed inside. A spent shell casing was located at the homeless camp, and a bag of cocaine was found within Olascoaga’s vehicle on the property.
Olascoaga was taken into custody and now faces charges of cocaine trafficking and two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. He was released the next day on a bond of $35,000.
