Volusia elementary school teacher arrested over ‘concerning statement’

VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. – A teacher at Blue Lake Elementary School was arrested on Thursday after a “concerning statement” came to light, according to the Volusia County School District.

A spokesperson for the district told News 6 that a staff member allegedly made the statement toward someone who wasn’t at the campus.

“There was no threat made to students or the school as a whole, and our Volusia County Schools Professional Standards Office is also investigating the matter,” the spokesperson wrote.

Later, DeLand police told News 6’s Molly Reed that the staff member was identified as teacher Armando Arends, 65, who now faces a charge of false reports of planting a bomb.

Police added that a call about the incident came in at 2:40 p.m., and they confirmed that there was no direct threat to students.

Arends has a first appearance scheduled for Saturday morning. He is held without bond.
