Off-duty Edgewater police officer shot, killed at Ormond-by-the-Sea Circle K, officials say

Shooter identified as gas station clerk Eduardo Machado, 24

VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. – An off-duty Edgewater police officer was shot and killed at a convenience store in Ormond-by-the-Sea on Monday afternoon, according to law enforcement officials.

Deputies said they responded to a Circle K located at Ocean Shore Boulevard and Wisteria Drive around 4 p.m. in reference to the shooting.

According to the sheriff’s office, a man – later identified as David Jewell, 45 – was located and pronounced dead at the scene.

According to Interim City Manager Joe Mahoney, officer Jewell was off-duty and not in uniform when he was shot.

Shortly after the shooting, deputies said that two persons of interest had been detained, one of whom was a Circle K employee who witnessed what happened.

Sheriff Mike Chitwood later revealed that the shooter was 24-year-old gas station clerk Eduardo Machado.

According to the sheriff’s office, surveillance footage showed Machado walking out of the store soon after Jewell came in.

Machado then went to his car to retrieve a jacket before walking back into the store and shooting Jewell in the back of the head five times, Chitwood explained.

“It is believed the victim and Machado knew each other,” a release by the sheriff’s office reads. “The motive for the shooting remains under investigation.”

Deputies said that Ocean Shore Boulevard was closed from Briggs to San Jose Drive while this shooting investigation continues.
