MARION COUNTY, Fla. – A person who shot and killed a driver Thursday in Marion County has been released from custody and the incident is being investigated as a possible Stand Your Ground case, sheriff’s officials said.

The fatal shooting happened around 6 p.m. in the 8200 block of SW 49th Avenue Road near Ocala.

The Marion County Sheriff’s Office said there was a report of a reckless driver, and an altercation between two people ensued.

“While en route, deputies were advised that a shooting had occurred after an altercation between the driver and another individual,” deputies said.

According to the sheriff’s office, deputies found a man, identified Friday by authorities as 37-year-old Troy Meeks, suffering from a gunshot.

Meeks was taken to a hospital, where he died, deputies said.

The sheriff’s office on Friday said the shooter, who remained at the scene and cooperated with an investigation, was taken into custody but not arrested.

The person was later released, and the case is being investigated as a possible Stand Your Ground incident, sheriff’s officials said.

Detectives are continuing to investigate and are working closely with the Fifth Judicial Circuit State Attorney’s Office, according to the sheriff’s office.
