INDIAN RIVER COUNTY, Fla. – An Indian River County sheriff’s deputy was killed and several others were injured Friday while trying to serve an eviction notice at a home near Vero Beach.
The shooting happened at the Bermuda Club along State Road A1A, north of Vero Beach, near Wabasso Beach Park.
Indian River County Sheriff Eric Flowers says deputies were at the home to evict Michael Halberstam from his mother’s home at her request.

He said when they entered the home, Halberstam began indiscriminately firing his gun.
Deputy Terri Mashkow, 47, was killed in the home.
Mashkow had served with the sheriff’s office for 25 years, starting as a 9-1-1 dispatcher.
“Terri was an amazing deputy. She had a beautiful heart, and she will be missed,” Flowers said.
Another deputy, Tino Arizpe, was shot in the shoulder. The sheriff says Frisbie will recover.
A locksmith who came with the deputies was also shot. They remained in the hospital in critical condition following surgery.
Deputies returned fire and shot Halberstam, who is in surgery and in critical condition.
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis said the Florida Department of Law Enforcement was working with local agencies, and he was monitoring the situation.
Brevard County Sheriff Wayne Ivey says he is sending deputies and supervisors to help handle calls for service while the agency deals with what has happened.

The sheriff’s office said deputies had been called to the home seven times this month. Detectives say Halberstam had recently been fired and had made “terrible comments” on social media about his former workplace, and also made negative posts about the Indian River Sheriff’s Office.
“This is not someone who was on our radar, is not somebody that we were actively engaged with,” Flowers said. “This was a standard call for service.”
The sheriff also said that Halberstam does have a narcotics charge and a misdemeanor assault charge on his record, but so far, there was nothing that indicated he should not have had a firearm.
