Suspect in Florida deputy’s killing dies; deputy promoted posthumously

Shooting happened in Indian River County

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY, Fla – The suspect who shot and killed an Indian River County Sheriff’s deputy on Friday died from his injuries on Saturday, officials said.

Officials said the shooting happened at the Bermuda Club along State Road A1A, north of Vero Beach, near Wabasso Beach Park.

Indian River County Sheriff Eric Flowers says deputies were at the home to evict Michael Halberstam from his mother’s home at her request. He said when they entered the home, Halberstam began indiscriminately firing his gun.

Deputy Terri Sweeting-Mashkow, 47, was killed in the home.

Deputies returned fire and shot Halberstam, who was initially reported to be in critical condition, but later died from his injuries.

On Saturday, Indian River County Sheriff’s Office announced that Sweeting-Mashkow has been posthumously promoted to sergeant “and will be addressed as Sgt. Sweeting-Mashkow henceforth.” the sheriff’s office announced.

Mashkow had served with the sheriff’s office for 25 years, starting as a 9-1-1 dispatcher.

Funeral service information will be released at a later date.
