Winter storm nipping at Orlando airport with post-Christmas delays, canceled flights

Pop-Tarts Bowl also draws crowds to city

ORLANDO, Fla. – Nearly 600 flights were delayed at Orlando International Airport as weather disruptions across the country rippled into Central Florida, complicating post-holiday travel and raising concerns for thousands of visitors arriving for Saturday’s Pop-Tarts Bowl.

Flight tracking data shows at least 69 flights were also canceled.

Airport officials say the majority of delays were caused by a strong winter storm impacting parts of the northern United States, creating a domino effect that disrupted aircraft and crew availability nationwide.

Inside the terminal, travelers watched flight boards filled with red delay notices and waited in crowded seating areas as airlines worked to rebook passengers.

Passenger Deborah Jenzen said her flight was delayed, leaving her unable to join her children on a different flight out of Orlando.

“I have a delayed flight,” Jenzen said. “And I tried to get on my children’s flight because they’re on a different flight and totally sold out.”

Jenzen said she had no luck finding another option.

“They’re all sold out,” she said. “All the flights.”

Brad Hubbert, who was trying to return to Atlanta, said his travel plans were pushed back for hours.

“We landed here at eight o’clock,” Hubbert said. “It’s now 10:30, and our flights are still delayed.”

He said his flight was originally scheduled to depart at 9 p.m.

Despite the inconvenience, Hubbert said he felt fortunate after seeing families stranded in the terminal.

“Seeing all these families, especially with small kids,” Hubbert said. “Kids are crying. Parents are struggling because they’re like, ‘What do we do?’”

With seating limited and many travelers seeking overnight accommodations, the airport hotel was nearly sold out. Long lines also formed at airline check-in counters, including Southwest Airlines, as passengers searched for updates and alternatives.

The delays come as Orlando prepares to host the Pop-Tarts Bowl, one of three bowl games in the area, drawing thousands of visitors into the city.

Travel experts recommend passengers heading to or from areas affected by winter weather closely monitor flight statuses and airline alerts before heading to the airport.
