FLAGLER COUNTY, Fla. – A Flagler County home health aide is accused of stealing cash and a debit card from a senior she was caring for, according to the sheriff’s office.

Katie Swain, 32, was arrested on Dec. 31 after a monthlong investigation.

According to sheriff’s officials, a senior resident at HarborChase of Palm Coast reported his wallet with cash and debit card were missing. Deputies determined Swain, who was a new hire, was the victim’s care provider on the day the items went missing.

The sheriff’s office said fraudulent transactions were made in Putnam County, near Swain’s residence. Deputies said she bought gas, snacks, groceries and made online purchases with the victim’s card.

“Store security camera video shows Swain using the victim’s stolen bank card to make dozens of purchases. In total, Swain made $664.02 of fraudulent transactions on the victim’s bank card and stole $30 in cash,” the sheriff’s office said.

Swain faces charges of fraudulent use of personal identification information and grand theft from a person over 65 years of age.

“This woman abused her position of trust and authority as a home health aide for gas, donuts and trinkets,” Flagler County Sheriff Rick Staly said in a release.

Swain was taken to Sheriff Perry Hall Inmate Detention Facility, where she was later released on a $10,000 bond.
