Firefighters assist USCG in nearshore rescue

FLAGLER BEACH, Fla. – Flagler Beach firefighters helped save two adults and a child from a capsizing sailboat early Saturday, according to the fire department.

The U.S. Coast Guard requested assistance around 4:30 a.m. from Flagler County Emergency Communications regarding a sailboat in the process of capsizing off the coast, the Flagler Beach Fire Department said on social media.

Flagler County Fire Rescue joined Flagler Beach firefighters at the scene, locating a sailboat that had run aground on a sandbar in nearshore waters, according to the post.

A rescuer deployed by Flagler Beach Fire managed to reach the vessel and help safely remove its three occupants, who were taken to a local hospital for shelter after being evaluated at the scene, the post states.

No injuries were reported to the occupants or to any of the first responders, firefighters said, adding the cause of the incident was still under investigation.

“The Flagler Beach Fire Department would like to remind marine vessel operators to closely monitor marine conditions, ensure vessels are properly equipped, and exercise caution when operating watercraft near shorelines and sandbars, especially during overnight and early morning hours,” the post states.

The aforementioned agencies were joined in their response by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the Flagler Beach Police Department and the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office, according to the post.
