Pickleball brawl: Couple faces charges in fight at Spruce Creek Country Club

Anthony and Julianne Sapienza arrested in Port Orange

VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. – A Volusia County couple faces charges after allegedly getting into a fight with their pickleball opponents on Sunday, according to the sheriff’s office.

Anthony Sapienza, 63, and Julianne Sapienza, 51, were arrested that afternoon at the Spruce Creek Country Club, records show.

Deputies and fire rescue responded to the country club upon hearing that more than a dozen people were involved in a physical altercation with reported injuries, according to an arrest affidavit.

“Come quick please (...) there’s about 20 people,” a 911 caller said. “Somebody hit somebody with a pickleball paddle, hit somebody in the head. Please, oh my God.”

Anthony Sapienza faces charges of aggravated battery causing bodily harm and two counts of battery on a person 65 or older while Julianne Sapienza is accused of battery on a person 65 or older. They have both since bonded out, records show.
