The New Smyrna Beach Police Department said Tuesday on social media that it was looking for the owner of a severely malnourished and emaciated dog that was located in the 200 block of Inwood Avenue.

Police followed up that post with another on Friday announcing Washington’s arrest. This was after multiple people had reportedly come forward with information that helped investigators identify Washington as the dog’s owner, the post states.

“Witnesses reported long‑term neglect, including the dog being confined indoors, not walked, urinating and defecating inside living spaces, and lacking proper food, water, and care," police said.

The dog is now named Olive and is said to be recovering well at the Edgewater Animal Shelter, having already gained around six pounds since arriving, according to the post.
