17-year-old arrested after rifle found in pants at Eustis festival, police say

EUSTIS, Fla. – A 17-year-old boy was arrested Saturday after a rifle was found in his pants at a festival at Carver Park in Eustis, according to police.

Two officers were patrolling the African-American Heritage Festival when they were approached by someone who said they saw a man wearing a black puffy jacket with what appeared to be a rifle under his right pant leg.

Police said she had seen the boy walking with a limp and holding his right pant leg in the area of Bates Avenue and Virginia Avenue.

According to the Eustis Police Department, one of the officers found a boy matching the description near the intersection, went up to him and detained him.

The other officer saw a “black buttstock of a rifle” on the boy, identified as Jarvis Smith.

Police said the officer removed an “Anderson Manufacturing AR-15 style rifle” from the 17-year-old’s body and that one live round was in the chamber.

Smith told police he had the weapon “for his protection.” He faces a charge of possession of a firearm under the age of 18.
