SANFORD, Fla. – Two people are expected to recover after a shooting outside a Sanford barbershop Saturday afternoon. Police said gunfire broke out near a busy shopping area off Orlando Drive, just steps from a Walmart.
A woman who works nearby captured part of the chaos on video. She said she heard shots before seeing two young men struggling over a gun.
“Police are investigating a shooting in front of a barbershop that sent two people to the hospital Saturday afternoon,” a reporter said. “It all unfolded right over here. I spoke with a woman who captured it on video.”
“We have crazy people over here all the time — crazy people — but nothing as crazy as shootings,” said Natonia Smith, who works nearby.
Smith said she couldn’t believe what she was watching and recording just doors down from her job, outside a barbershop near the Walmart off Orlando Drive.
“I’ve never seen anything like that — up close and personal,” Smith said.
Smith said she called police as the men wrestled with the gun.
“When I was sitting in the back, I heard ‘pow,’” Smith said. “Then it stopped for like three seconds, then I heard another ‘pow.’ Then it stopped for like a full minute because they were up here tussling.”
Video shows that shortly afterward, two men ran from the area. When officers arrived, police said they found one person with what appeared to be a gunshot wound. That person was taken to a hospital with injuries not believed to be life-threatening, police said.
“Officers clearly had everything under control by the time I showed up, but it does make you wonder — should I go pick up somewhere else?” said Aubrie Cartas, a local shopper.
Investigators said a second person later showed up at a different hospital, also with injuries not believed to be life-threatening. Police said the shooting appears to be an isolated incident involving people who know each other.
