POLK COUNTY, Fla. – It was a bittersweet day on Wednesday as the remains of Army Major Cody Khork were returned back to Polk County.
Khork, who was posthumously promoted from captain to major, was killed in early March as he was serving in Kuwait during Operation Epic Fury.
This happened as tensions between the U.S. and the Middle East, specifically Iran, remain high.
Wednesday afternoon, a plane carrying Khork’s body arrived at Lakeland Linder International Airport.
News 6’s Amy Russo was there the moment the plane touched down. She says as the plane made its approach on the runway, you could hear a pin drop. Everyone was silent, showing their respect for their friend and neighbor who paid the ultimate sacrifice for his nation.
The plane came to a halt under a massive American flag, which was held up by two fire trucks. Officials took their time, handling every moment with care and respect, as Major Khork’s casket was moved from the plane to the hearse.
Following the transition, a procession kicked off, ultimately ending at the Oak Ridge Funeral Home located in Winter Haven. The 20-mile trek to Khork’s hometown included dozens of people lining streets, showing their appreciation and respect for the fallen soldier.
Andrew Chambers says this moment hit home particularly hard for him.
“I came up here today to show my support,” said Chambers. “I grew up in a military family. My great uncle died in World War II.”
Many took American flags and lined the streets with them. Khork’s devotion and sacrifice was making a lasting impact on many, including one woman who traveled from Hillsborough County.
“I just felt like we needed to come and say goodbye to him and thank him for his service and everything he has given to us,” said Theresa Huber.
Friends and family previously told News 6 that Major Khork’s dedication goes far beyond the uniform. He was a true leader and an inspiration who may now be gone but will never be forgotten.
Khork will also be recognized posthumously with the Purple Heart and Combat Action Badge which symbolizes his sacrifice and courage.
