New Smyrna Beach public works vehicle strikes 2 pedestrians, officials say

Crash happened on 27th Avenue and South Atlantic Avenue

NEW SYMRNA BEACH, Fla. – A City of New Smyrna Beach Public Works employee was involved in a crash that struck two pedestrians on Friday morning, officials said.

The crash happened at the intersection of 27th Avenue and South Atlantic Avenue.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, a 2018 Ford F-250 traveling eastbound on E. 27th Avenue attempted a left turn to go northbound on S. Atlantic Avenue, failed to yield, and struck two people walking westbound in a marked crosswalk.

The driver, a 23-year-old Oak Hill man, was not injured and remained at the scene. A male pedestrian was airlifted to the hospital with critical injuries. The female pedestrian was transported with serious injuries and remained in stable condition, FHP said.

The city said it is cooperating fully with the Florida Highway Patrol and its investigation.
