ORMOND BEACH, Fla. – Ormond Beach leaders approved a controversial development on the closed Tomoka Oaks golf course Tuesday night.

The idea has been on the table for years, and now the city will move forward with turning the closed course into a neighborhood, a plan that includes 254 homes.

People in the Tomoka Oaks neighborhood say they are concerned about the impact the development could have on traffic, safety, and the overall character of the area.

Residents say the number of homes could lead to congestion and dangerous driving conditions.

Some people in the area spoke at last night’s meeting.

“As elected officials your responsibility is to serve the residents of this community of Ormond Beach,” said one woman. “Not to developers who are going to come in, make their money, move on, and forget completely about this community.”

After a nearly 3-hour-long public comment session, the final vote passed three to 2.
