Britt Road in Lake County one step closer to being fully reopened

A portion of the road has been closed after Hurricane Milton caused it to collapse during a washout

Since October of 2024, Britt Road in Lake County has been the home of a massive road collapse, making it impassable. It was caused due to damage by Hurricane Milton.

The road once connected State Road 44 and Wolf Branch Road. Soon, that may be its reality once again.

“We just signed the last legal document we needed in order to have the easement that we had to have for drainage purposes in order to move forward with the process of picking a contractor and then beginning the actual work,” said Lake County Commissioner Leslie Campione.

She says the county is just waiting to have their water management district and FDOT permits approved. After that, a contractor will be selected, and boots will be on the ground.

“We know we will be working on it during the summer, so the idea will be that by the end of summer we are back and running,” said the commissioner.

Engineers have completely redesigned the road to help prevent a washout from happening again.

Commuters tell News 6’s Amy Russo it’s about time. Since Britt Road hasn’t been an option surrounding roads have seen a lot more traffic.

“I’ve been in this area since I was one and I’ve never seen 441 like it is now,” said Gavin Dupeuis. He frequents the roads in Lake County.

So does Larry.

“It’s been a hectic thing. It’s been inconvenient,” said Larry.

When News 6 informed them work to rebuild Britt Road back was finally moving forward they were excited.

“This is a good thing,” said Larry. “You got schools there too so you got busses that go down through there so kids can be safe.”

“Looking forward to it for sure,” said Gavin. “Would be nice to cut that extra few minutes off that it’s taking me now. As soon as Britt Road opens I’ll be back on it.”

Britt Road will remain two lanes. Construction is expected to cost about $3 million split between local tax dollars and a federal grant.
