Oviedo to discuss raising trash collection fees

City has not increased rates since 2021

OVIEDO, Fla. – Garbage collection fees may be on the rise for homeowners in Oviedo.

At a work session on Monday, city council members will discuss options for residential solid waste rates.

Currently, households pay $25 per month for collection, disposal, and recycling services.

At the current rate, however, Oviedo lost more than $134,000 in 2025, and projections from the city manager show the deficit could grow to more than $1 million by 2030.

“Gas prices have gone up, tipping fees have gone up, labor costs have gone up, and over the course of years, it’s just gotten to be too big,” Mayor Megan Sladek said.

To offset the deficit, the city council is considering two options for fee increases.

The first option would initially raise the collection rate to $29.09 per month, followed by yearly increases until 2030, when the rate would reach $31.51.

The second option would include hiring a full-rime position to oversee responsibilities associated with solid waste operations.

According to the city manager, a dedicated position for solid waste contract oversight is necessary to ensure quality customer service, service delivery, and protection of city infrastructure.

If the city decides to move forward with the second option, the rate would initially rise to $29.29 per month, followed by yearly increases until 2030, when the rate would reach $32.16.

Monday’s work session to discuss fee increases is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. at 400 Alexandria Blvd.
