FT. LAUDERDALE, Fla. – After departing from Florida earlier this month, a crew member aboard a Princess Cruises ship has now been declared dead, according to company officials.
In a statement on Monday morning, the cruise line told News 6 that it was responding to a “situation” involving the crew member aboard Regal Princess in waters off the coast of Cancun.

“The crew member is currently unaccounted for, and an active search and rescue operation is underway,” the statement reads.
But later on Monday afternoon, Princess Cruises confirmed that the crew member had passed away.
“Our heartfelt condolences go out to the crew’s family and friends during this difficult time. Grief support services are being offered to guests and crew members affected by this event,” officials wrote. “Princess Cruises thanks the local maritime authorities and our colleagues from Carnival Jubilee who assisted in search and rescue efforts.”
Regal Princess has since continued its voyage and is expected to arrive in Belize on Wednesday.
Afterward, the ship is scheduled to travel to Cozumel on July 16, and it’s expected to cap off its seven-day journey upon its return to Ft. Lauderdale on July 18.
