Mandatory campus evacuation order issued for Bethune-Cookman University

Classes canceled indefinitely

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – A mandatory campus evacuation order was issued Tuesday for Bethune-Cookman University.

The order, effective as of 5 p.m., is based on the anticipated trajectory and strength of Hurricane Irma, along with the information provided by the National Weather Service, the university said in a statement.

For students, the order means several things: No. 1, classes have been canceled until further notice. No. 2, the residence halls will close at 6 p.m. Wednesday, with dining services closed by 7 p.m.  And No. 3, students must be off campus by Wednesday evening.

Anyone unable to evacuate will be taken to a local shelter, the university said.

Before leaving campus, students were asked to remove food items from their refrigerators (and unplug them), along with unplugging all electronics; secure their personal belongings; pack up and take any and all valuables or medications; and close and lock windows. In addition, first-floor residents must move their things off the dorm floors, as the university said it’s not responsible for any damaged items.

A return date will be announced once university officials know more, or once the storm has passed.

Faculty members and staffers will work through Wednesday.

Everyone is encouraged to check email frequently, follow the university on social media and download the Wildcat Safety App for up-to-the-minute information.

Anyone with questions should call 386-481-2900 or visit cookman.edu.
