NASA test fires Space Launch System engine

Engine will help propel astronauts deeper into space

STENNIS SPACE CENTER, Miss. – It may be a small step for NASA scientists but the goal of putting humans further into space than ever before is now a little bit closer.

NASA fired an upgraded space shuttle engine Thursday at its testing range in Mississippi.

The modifications will help the Space Launch System lift off with more thrust than the Saturn-V rockets that put man on the moon.

NASA is aiming for the first SLS test launch in 2018 at Kennedy Space Center.

The first manned launch could come by 2022.
