ORLANDO, Fla. – Just in time for the busy summer travel season, Southwest Airlines is ending its most recognizable perk.

Among the newly announced initiatives, Southwest will continue to offer two free checked bags to Rapid Rewards A-List Preferred Members and customers traveling on Business Select fares, and one free checked bag will be offered to A-List Members and other select customers. Rapid Rewards Credit Cardmembers will receive credit for one checked bag.

Customers not qualifying for these options will be charged for their first and second checked bags, with changes taking effect for flights booked on or May 28.

Bob Jordan, president, CEO and vice chairman of the Board of Directors at Southwest Airlines, emphasized the company’s commitment to meeting customer needs and attracting new segments.

“We have tremendous opportunity to meet current and future Customer needs, attract new Customer segments we don’t compete for today, and return to the levels of profitability that both we and our Shareholders expect,” Jordan said. “We will do all this while remaining focused on what’s made us strong — our People and the authentic, friendly, and award-winning Customer Service only they can provide.”

Southwest has also adjusted the number of Rapid Rewards points earned on qualifying flights, increasing points for Business Select fares while reducing them for Wanna Get Away and Wanna Get Away Plus fares. The loyalty program will introduce variable redemption rates based on flight demand, aiming to deepen loyalty and reach consumers prioritizing fare value, the airline said.

Additionally, Southwest plans to introduce a new Basic fare for tickets purchased on or after May 28 ahead of offering assigned seating and extra legroom options. The airline is expanding its distribution channels, with flights and fare products now bookable through Expedia.
