Texas Tech shooting suspect had previously been arrested in Central Florida

Rhino Simboli was arrested in 2019 in Volusia County

VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. – A man who was killed in a shootout with Texas Tech University officers on Tuesday had previously been arrested in Central Florida.

Rhino Simboli, 53, opened fire on two Texas Tech officers who were checking a suspicious vehicle outside the school’s stadium, Jones AT&T Stadium, according to CBS News.

Simboli had previously been arrested in Volusia County in 2019 after authorities say he pointed a gun at a man’s head and fired twice at the victim’s front door in Holly Hill.

Court records show the victim told police Simboli was asking about a piece of mail. When he told Simboli he was at the wrong home and to leave the property, Simboli shot at the door.

After the shots were fired, the victim called 911 and ran to his backyard.

“I don’t know who it is,” the victim told a dispatcher.

The Texas Tech officers were taken to the hospital, where one remains. The other has since been released.
