DESTIN, Fla. – Florida’s fishing enthusiasts have reason to celebrate as the state announced a record-breaking Gulf red snapper recreational season for 2025.
During a news conference held in Destin on Monday, Gov. Ron DeSantis announced that anglers will enjoy a total of 126 days of fishing, shattering previous records and providing ample opportunities for both Floridians and visitors.
The season will kick off Memorial Day weekend, running from May 24 to 26, and will reopen from June 1 to July 31. This extended timeframe includes key holidays such as Father’s Day and Independence Day.

Additionally, Florida families will have more chances to fish in the fall, with daily opportunities from Sept. 1 to 14, followed by three-day weekends through the end of the year.
“This includes holiday opportunities on Veterans Day, the Thursday through Sunday of Thanksgiving, and yes, even red snapper on Christmas for those who are so inclined," said DeSantis.
Florida’s Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) has been managing the Gulf red snapper population, allowing the state to extend the fishing season significantly. In 2024, the season lasted 103 days, which was already a record at the time.
While the Gulf red snapper season is expanding, Gov. DeSantis is also advocating for the management of Atlantic red snapper.
Currently, the federal government only allows two days of fishing for Atlantic red snapper, a stark contrast to the Gulf’s extended season. The governor has been in discussions with federal officials, including President Trump and the Secretary of Commerce, to gain management rights for the Atlantic.
“We are requesting to manage the red snapper in the Atlantic. We will do a good job, have accurate data, and expand opportunities for many people,” he stated.
The governor expressed hope that by 2026, he might be able to announce similar fishing opportunities for the East Coast of Florida.
