MONTICELLO, Fla. – Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis unveiled a statue of Thomas Jefferson at the Jefferson County Courthouse on Wednesday.

The event was to be among the first of Florida’s “America 250″ celebrations, which the governor said will be slated all year leading up to the 250th anniversary of the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 2026.

DeSantis first previewed Florida’s “America 250″ commemorations back in February while unveiling a statue of George Washington at the state’s capitol, pledging similar actions in the months to come in all 67 counties.

“I think we’re really ahead of the curve with where other states are going,” DeSantis said Wednesday. “We’ve done the Washington, we have the Jefferson we’ll unveil here and I know we’re working on Hamilton, Madison, I think Franklin’s in the works, we have that coming which will be really, really good, and on and on it goes. And you know, we’re not just going to only do counties that have namesakes; we think that America’s 250 is important to celebrate in a wide variety of ways across all of Florida."
