"With all of the positive changes happening at the Island, it is with much sadness that we must also announce a new policy that no longer allows dogs on the property starting Mon, October 29. We love the pups as much as you do, however, the safety of our guests is top priority," a post on Wekiva Island's Facebook page read.

Hundreds of people commented on the post with mixed reactions. Some said they were disappointed because their dogs enjoyed cooling off in the water while others said they can still enjoy everything the island has to offer without their canine companion.

Officials from the island took notice and responded to many of the commenters.

"We completely understand the disappointment and frustration. We’ve had so many fun, sweet dogs at the Island over the years and are disappointed to have had to make this decision too. We truly do think it is in the best interest of our guests long term," one comment from the island read.

Along with the change in the dog policy, the island also plans to bring back the Without A Paddle Cafe, increase its occupancy from 206 guests to 395 and add an art gallery on the second floor of the  Tooting Otter Craft Beer, Wine and General Store, which will open in spring 2019.

Officials said dogs can still be on Wekiva River as long as they are not on Wekiva Island property, which includes launching from the island's boat ramp.
