Search for suspect in Deltona carjacking leads to 2 unrelated arrests

Ruben Morales, 21, wanted in connection with Dec. 5 carjacking

DELTONA, Fla. – The search for a man wanted in connection with a carjacking in Deltona earlier this month led to the arrest of two men on unrelated charges, according to the Volusia County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies said they were searching for 21-year-old Ruben Morales at his home on Butterfield Street Friday when they found the men who were taken into custody.

Morales is one of three suspects wanted in a Dec. 5 armed carjacking that took place on Sanborn Lane, during which deputies said two of the suspects approached a 19-year-old woman who was sitting in her car and asked for her help jump-starting their vehicle.

Authorities said the victim declined to do so, which prompted the men to pull out weapons and demand she get out of her car. The victim said she saw the third man walking on Sanborn Lane before all three drove off, according to deputies.

Neither Morales nor the other two suspects in the carjacking were located during the search Friday, but the two other residents, 49-year-old Joseph Brian Valentine, and 18-year-old Jihad William Morales, are facing multiple drug and gun-related charges, according to the Sheriff's Office.

Valentine was charged with five counts of possession of a firearm as a convicted felon and possession of marijuana under 20g, deputies said. He is being held at the Volusia County Jail on a $25,500 bail.

Jihad Morales was charged with possession of more than 20 grams of marijuana, possession with intent to sell marijuana, possession of paraphernalia and possession of a firearm as a convicted felon, deputies said. He is being held on a $28,000 bail.

Deputies said they also found two rifles, four handguns, more than 150 rounds of ammunition and nearly two pounds of marijuana inside the home. More than $4,000 was also seized.

Authorities are asking anyone with information on Morales' whereabouts to call 911 or submit an anonymous tip to Crime Stoppers by calling 1-888-277-8477, or visiting NortheastFlorida.CrimeStoppersWeb.com. Tipsters could be eligible for a cash reward, according to the Sheriff's Office.

Deputies did not provide details on the other two suspects in the carjacking. The woman was not injured, deputies said.
