Shark bites surfer on calf at Ormond Beach

Bite was third in Volusia County in 2017

ORMOND BEACH, Fla. – A shark bit a Canadian woman on the calf Tuesday afternoon at Ormond Beach, according to Volusia County Beach Safety Ocean Rescue.

The 35-year-old woman was bitten shortly before 4 p.m. when she  jumped off her surfboard into chest-deep water. She was treated at the scene and was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Tuesday's incident was the third shark bite in Volusia County this year, officials said.

Two people were rescued from the ocean without incident on Tuesday and beach patrol flew the red flag and the purple because of Portuguese man-of-war washing up on the shore. Sting complaints were minimal.
