Stretch of road dedicated to honor Deputy First Class Norman Lewis

'He was a man with a gentle heart, a gentle spirit,' Sheriff Demings says

ORLANDO, Fla. – A sign dedicated to honor the life and work of First Class Deputy Norman Lewis was unveiled on Wednesday by officials in Orlando.

Orlando Mayor Teresa Jacobs and Congresswoman Val Demings spoke to honor Lewis, who they described as a kind man with a big heart.

During the dedication ceremony, Lewis' mother, Norma, spoke of a time when she and her son went to a homeless shelter and fed the homeless.

"He was a man with a gentle heart, a gentle spirit," Demings told the group as he recounted a little boy who took a photo with Lewis after the Pulse nightclub attack.

Demings said the child gave him a copy of the photo of him and Lewis.

Lewis was killed in January as he was setting up a perimeter during the search for a man accused of killing Orlando police Lt. Debra Clayton.

Part of Pine Hills Road, where Deputy Lewis died in a crash during a manhunt for Clayton's suspected killer, will be renamed First Class Deputy Normal Lewis Memorial Highway.
