DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – A surfer's wife is asking folks to be on the lookout for her husband's prosthetic eye that he lost Wednesday in the ocean near the Daytona Beach Bandshell.
"I don't know if my metal detector picks up eyeballs. I didn't have any luck finding those," beach-goer Cliff Daniels said.
The couple declined a camera interview but told News 6, Raymond Davidson was riding a wave, keeping his eyes open to see inside the tunnel, when he wiped out. His prosthetic eye disappeared into the water.
"It would be amazing to find it in the ocean," Davidson's wife, Carolyn Pandolfi said.
Davidson's wife said he's had the prosthetic for about 20 years after losing his eye in a work accident.
"People lose a lot of things, you know," beach-goer Angie Smith said. "This just happens to be more important."
Many folks agree. One stranger even created a GoFundMe account, hoping to raise $1,800, which is the cost of a brand new eye.
"If everybody sends in a little bit, if they can afford it, it turns out to be a lot," said Pandolfi.
Davidson has an eye appointment on Oct. 6 at the Eye Center in St. Augustine. Anyone who would like to donate can do so at Gofundme.com.
