Volusia deputies shut down several illegal Internet cafes

Armed robberies prompted crackdown

VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. – Several illegal internet cafes have been shut down as part of a crackdown prompted by two armed robberies, according to the Volusia County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies said that since Oct. 19, cease-and-desist orders have been issued for 11 gaming locations in East Volusia County and four locations in West Volusia County.

The orders are effective immediately. Orders are pending for two more locations. So far, 12 cafes have shut down while the others appear to be in the process of doing so. The orders warn business owners that that they could face criminal charges for conducting illegal activity.

Deputies said two recent armed robberies at local gaming businesses led to the crackdown, as did a recently appeals court ruling that determined that gaming devices that rely on chance rather than skill are illegal.
