Whatâs going on, guys? Meteorologist Jonathan Kegges back with you for another hurricane season. Crazy, right? This first edition of the Tropics Watch newsletter is going to be a little long. Sorry about that!
I want to go over some housekeeping items with you guys and there is already some hurricane hype out there. Weâre going to take out that trash in a minute.

Right on schedule there is also already a blob out there. Donât worry itâs not a big deal. Weâll get to that in a second.
First I just want to say that we, The News 6 Weather Team, will be here for you every step of the way. There is a lot of noise out there when it comes to the weather. A lot of hype, a lot of clickbait etc. You have my word that you will never see any of those scare tactics from myself and News 6. Seeing this myself makes my blood boil. Trust me.
Weâre going to talk about a lot of stuff (hopefully while everything remains out at sea), but we will do so with sound science and meteorology and absolutely no scare tactics.
It is my hope to have a conversation about the weather this season and to pass along everything I know so that you know what to look out for.
You can expect an email from me every Monday evening (and as needed) during hurricane season. If itâs quiet, weâre going to talk about it. If thereâs something going on out there, Iâm definitely going to be talking about it.
đ2025 Hurricane Season
The forecasts from several entities expect another above average year. Itâs hard for a below average year these days with the water temps being so warm. Meteorologist David Nazario and myself put together a little breakdown on where we think some of the âhotspotsâ could be based on the pattern.
đA Yellow Blob To Start The Season
Earlier Monday(6/2), the National Hurricane Center highlighted an area off of the southeast corner of the U.S. This is no deal for Florida and just a little deal for the Carolinas.
Regardless if this does develop, gusty showers are likely coming for the Carolina coast late week. For Florida this will increase the rip current risk and may help to dry things out late week.
đď¸Itâs Garbage Day
Ok, so I mentioned hype. If you have seen posts on social media showing a major hurricane in the Gulf around June 10, disregard it. Can we see some development in that region over the next week or so? Sure? The atmosphere will become conducive to thunderstorms developing that region. The catch, the GFS is typically too fast and too aggressive in developing western Caribbean storms. The only model being shown on social media? You guess it...the GFS. The hypesters wonât tell you that, but Iâll make sure you know what to trust and what is TRASH! So while there could be some tropical development down there in mid June the GFS runs being shared everywhere are definitely TRASH!
