🤔Is The Atlantic Waking Up?

Short answer? No.

Long answer? I’m glad you asked

So Invest 90L was designated near Bermuda over the weekend. An Invest by the way is short for area of investigation. You can read more on why that is significant here.

Development chances sharply rose Sunday into Monday morning and then began dropping Monday afternoon.

There was a very small window for this to become a tropical depression or tropical storm, but now wind shear as arrived at the storm’s location and is starting to pull it apart. While there is a very small chance this gets named, it is unlikely. Whether it does or doesn’t it won’t impact anyone.

So. Is this a sign that the Atlantic is waking up? Absolutely not!

The disturbance (90L) attempted to develop in the subtropics farther north of where tropics are.

Water temperature anomaly. The subtropics are much warmer with respect to normal than the subtropics.

With respect to normal, the subtropics are much hotter than the tropics at the moment and therefore it’s no surprise a cluster of storms tried to organize in the middle of the big red blob on the map above.

That is the water temperature anomaly by the way. The darker the red, the more above average the temperatures are. Blue represents below average temperatures. A lot of tropics are below normal in the temperature department as of June 23.

All of this to say that the disturbance that popped up is kind of an anomaly in the pattern and not suggestive of an active stretch on the way.

The deep tropics are still very much in hibernation.

We should continue to keep things quiet through at least the 4th of July.
