Holiday Tropical Development?

Tropics Watch update for 6/30

NHC Outlook

Since the last time we talked we have had two named storms pop up. If you blinked you missed Andrea and Barry. They were that short-lived.

Andrea lasted exactly 12 hours as it meandered in no man’s land in the North Atlantic.

Barry, forming over the weekend, was also not around long, but did bring heavy rain to Mexico.

So my bet of taking the under of .5 named storms before August isn’t going to hit, but both of these storms were barely classifiable. Barry was a little closer because we at least had hurricane hunter aircraft confirming it, but man was Barry sloppy. See below...

Flossie...the sixth named storm of the 2025 Eastern Pacific Hurricane Season was getting going on the Pacific side of Mexico in the same shot.

Anyway, we now have another shot for tropical development. *IF* it develops, it will be another homegrown storm, forming off a stalled cold front over warm water, typical for early in the hurricane season.

Setup late week

The biggest thing to know about this is significant development is unlikely and regardless of development, unsettled weather will be around a good chunk of the Southeast and Deep South, due to this stalled front.

The bigger impact to anyone in these areas will be the likelihood of rain for the Fourth and the days leading up to the holiday. Tropical development is also possible, but that really won’t change the forecast.

In terms of the tropical development, the European ensembles....the 51 members with different initial conditions entered in to show a range of outcomes...show a low chance for development east of Florida.

European ensembles

The greenish color represents about 30% of the 51 members showing a tropical depression forming by the weekend east of Florida.

Still, the deep tropics are nice and quiet!
