Erin Forms, Expected To Become Major Hurricane

Tropics Watch update for 8/11

Tropical satellite

The calendar flipped to August and just like that, we’re tracking a tropical storm.

Erin formed just before 11 a.m. Monday and is expected to grow into a major hurricane north of the Caribbean.

It’s truly too early to tell what’s going on with this thing. Model guidance this far out and when the storm hasn’t developed a well-defined center really can’t be trusted.

One of the main things to watch is the steering flow.

Model guidance continues to indicate a weakness in the steering ridge as the storm passes north of the Caribbean.

Steering current

If that weakness comes to fruition and the ridge of high pressure retrogrades back west, there is a high potential that this storm will turn and stay out at sea.

Either way, we’re likely looking at our first hurricane of the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season, and it could be a strong one. I’ll keep you posted.

I’m filling in on the morning show today and I thought, “Why wait until the evening to send?” Hope you don’t mind!
