This week, I had the chance to see my first Broadway show in months. It is great to be back at the theatre.
Hey, I’m News 6 producer Brooke Savage, the writer behind this Setting The Stage newsletter.
Let’s take a look at what we have to look forward to. ⤵
📗 “The Wiz” is in downtown Orlando
Based on L. Frank Baum’s children’s book, “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz,” the all-Black musical follows Dorothy’s journey to find her place in a contemporary world.
It features an iconic score packed with soul, gospel, rock and ’70s funk. “The Wiz” will be inside Walt Disney Theater at Dr. Phillips Center through this Sunday. I had the chance to see the show earlier this week and I was really impressed! Anchor Lisa Bell was there too. See her review.
After the show, I had the chance to chat with Alan Mingo, who plays The Wiz, and Kyla Jade, who plays Evillene. They really had a great perspective on the message behind the musical. Click here for the interview and for ticket information.
🦇 Phantasmagoria’s ‘Hauntingly Whimsical Tales’
Phantasmagoria Orlando and DiDonna Productions is celebrating spooky season through the tales of the late artist and author Edward Gorey. This year would have been his 100th birthday.
The Victorian Horror Troupe blends together storytelling, dance, puppetry, projects, original music and more. The group will be bringing Gorey’s worlds to the big stage.
Tonight and tomorrow they’ll have their show in Leesburg. Then they’ll have stops in Orlando, DeLand, Tampa, Ocala and Sanford. Click here for details.
🚲 “Stranger Sings! The Parody Musical” wraps up this weekend
This is your last chance to get your own fix of 1980s Hawkins right here in Central Florida.
Based on the TV show “Stranger Things” on Netflix, “Stranger Sings! The Parody Musical” takes you back to 1983 where you follow Mike, Eleven, Lucas, Dustin and the rest of the crew for a night of adventure.
You can expect a trip into the Upside Down, dancing interdimensional creatures, thrills and even justice for everyone’s favorite missing character, Barb.
This show sounds like so much fun! The musical has a few more shows between tonight and Sunday. Here’s the info you need.
🖼 How does free family fun sound?
The Orlando Museum of Art is offering quite the itinerary tomorrow and there’s something for everyone! There will be live music, solar telescope activities, storytelling activities and so much more. Meteorologist Michelle Morgan posted the details in this week’s 6 things to do.
