The team says Clark was admitted on Tuesday, Sept. 9, after experiencing a medical emergency, and remained in the hospital until he died unexpectedly.

In a news conference on Wednesday, UCF football head coach Scott Frost spoke about Clark’s impact and the importance of being around the team for support.

“Sean’s compassion and passion for his players in the first place was real, and they knew that, and that’s why he fit in so well here,” said Frost. “He was a perfect example of the type of man that I want in our building.”

Clark joined UCF in December 2024 after serving as head coach of Appalachian State, where Clark also played college ball on the offensive line.

He also coached at Eastern Kentucky, Purdue and Kent State.

Clark is survived by his wife, Jonelle, and two children.

“Shawn was so much more than a coach. He was a remarkable man, husband, and father who cared deeply about his players and staff,” said UCF head coach Scott Frost in a statement. “The reaction of our players and coaches to the news this morning is a testament to Shawn’s character and the impact he had on every life that he touched. He was loved. Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife, Jonelle, and children, Giana and Braxton. We are here to support them and will continue to keep them in our hearts and prayers.”
