WILD VIDEO: Lake Mary wins Class 7A football championship on last-second Hail Mary pass

Rams top previously undefeated Vero Beach 28-7

MIAMI, Fla. – Lake Mary High School completed a stunning comeback to capture the FHSAA Class 7A state football championship Saturday night in Miami, defeating Vero Beach 28-27 on a walk-off touchdown.

The Rams trailed 21-3 at halftime before rallying in the second half. The game was decided on the final play, when Lake Mary connected on a dramatic Hail Mary touchdown pass to tie the game before kicking the extra point to secure the one-point victory.

This is the first football state title in school history.

“It was amazing,” head coach Scott Perry said after the game. “Everyone thought we were out of it. Guys started to leave on the other side when (Vero Beach) was way up, and it started raining. But our kids, through the rain, just kept fighting. I can’t say enough about how proud I am of these guys.”

Senior quarterback Noah Grubbs threw for three touchdowns, including the Hail Mary pass. The ball was tipped near the goal line by Vero Beach. Wide receiver Barrett Schulz caught the ball but was stopped short, and his teammate Tavarius Brundidge, Jr., stripped the ball out of his hands and took it into the end zone.

“Shock,” Schulz said. “I was so glad (Brundidge, Jr.) was standing right there, ready to just grab it out of my hands.”

The Florida High School Athletic Association celebrated the finish on social media, declaring: “A HAIL MARY FOR LAKE MARY!!! A walk-off TD and they win it 28-27!!! They are the Class 7A Football State Champions!!!”

“Like we’ve always said: it’s state champs or bust,” Grubbs said. “Second place isn’t going to be remembered for long.”
